Previously, I always had extremely or even dangerously low blood pressure, but about a year ago, a reading showed 185 / 100. I thought it was a fluke; I was concerned that I would be late, due to how long the physical was taking, and that the reading was due to stress. However, yesterday, I had it checked again, this time 191/106, so apparently I do have a real concern. What herbs may be helpful, in this situation?

Jennifer,

It’s funny you should ask this today—just this morning I helping a friend with her high blood pressure and thought about writing a post covering natural herbal remedies for high blood pressure. Click here to read the post .

A lot depends on why your blood pressure has gone up. There are various reasons for it to be on the high side like yours is, so you need to find out why it’s so high. Normal blood pressure is around 120/80 and when it gets to 140/90 it’s getting to stage 1 hypertension. You need to find out why it’s so high, so please be sure and see your doctor. As to herbs that are helpful, read on.

Garlic it the number one herb to control blood pressure. Use it every day in your food such as soups, make garlic butter on toast, you can even mix it with mayo for your sandwiches or salads. Garlic doesn’t just help with your high blood pressure, it aids in overall cardiovascular health. Very good for you.

Another herb is Hawthorn — make it into a tea and drink one or two cups a day.

The herb I like best is flax seed. Not a lot of people know how beneficial flax seed is for the body. Flax seed is loaded with omega 3, which is a fatty acid. Use 1 teaspoon per cup of water and hard boil it for 3 minutes. Let cool slightly, just slightly and strain out the seeds and drink. Try to drink 1 to 3 cups a day. You can make a batch of it and heat it up, as you need to. Also, don’t foget to read this post for more information on high blood pressure and how to control it with natural herbal remedies.

Remember, just using herbs won’t be beneficial if you don’t find out why your blood pressure is so high. It could be your lifestyle, too much salt, over weight, too much junk food, stress or too much alcohol use. So please see your doctor to find out why your blood pressure is so high.

Last 6 months I’ve been having autoimmune flare up that surfaced (last 3 months) as rheumatoid arthritis. Suppressing the immune system (taking DMARDs as the basis of treatment) will just kill me. I cannot stomach even vitamins (they lay heavy on my stomach for 2 or more hours), and I have tumors springing up and then disappearing due to various herbal and energy treatments. Suppressing the immune system will just help various tumors turn cancerous. No way I’m going to do it. So I’ve been taking self made caps filled with various herbs for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. And the thing keeps very slightly progressing daily. Since yesterday I added Black Seed (Nigella Sativa). The swelling in the joints was completely gone for 4 hours!!!
Would you happen to know what is the maximum safe dosage of raw Black Seed (not the extract)? Can I overdose on it? What would be the consequences of overdosing?
It is the yummiest thing I have ever eaten! Totally delicious. I don’t want to take extracts, I’d rather consume it by cupfuls, if it is all right to do so. It beats any snack or desert I have ever eaten!
Love and blessings to you and thank you for your wonderful generosity,
Krys

Krys,

Anything thing more than 50 to 75 mgs per day is not recommended. There isn’t any known (so far) problem with Black Cumin Seed but with any herb it’s best to take them two or three times a day rather than just once a day. It’s the way your body uses the herb. Try once a day, if that doesn’t work then try two times a day, then three times a day with the recommended dosage.

I use a teaspoon a day either as a tea or mixed in with any food I eat. I’ve even been known to add it to my coffee in the mornings.

Also, be aware that your body will build up an immunity to the herb just like anything else you take or eat. So give your body a rest for a week or two after taking it for a month to let it try and heal (your body). Then you can start taking them again.

You can also use Black Cumin Seed in salads, make into a tea (ground it to a fine power and pour hot water over it and let it steep for 5 minutes), or add it whole to stir fry vegetables, casseroles, and breads. I’ve found this is the best way to get all the benefits of Black cumin Seed. In India they add it to their daily meals and take it as a tea if they feel a cold or flu coming on. Taken daily with food is the best way to use any herb because it gives your body the needed benefits of the herb.

Large doses have traditionally been used to induce abortion in the past so it will cause bleeding if you take too much. Don’t take if you’re pregnant without the supervision of your doctor.

One more thing — Black cumin seeds mixed with honey and garlic are excellent tonics for people with asthma or coughs as well as those who want to enhance their immune system.

Good luck and enjoy!
